I would like to talk about crime film. The film’s name “memento” was released in 2000. It is directed by Christopher Nolan. The first time that I watched this film, I was confuse with the idea of narrative. I think that I have to watch it again to make me understand the story.

The characters

  • Guy Pearce as Leonard Shelby
  • Carrie-Anne Moss as Natalie
  • Joe Pantoliano as John Edward “Teddy” Gammell
  • Stephen Tobolowsky as Samuel R. “Sammy” Jankis
  • Mark Boone Junior as Burt
  • Callum Keith Rennie as Dodd
  • Larry Holden as James F. “Jimmy” Grantz
  • Jorja Fox as Catherine Shelby
  • Harriet Sansom Harris as Mrs. Jankis

The idea of narractive

The film divided into two different sequences. Firstly, a series in black-and-white that is shown chronologically. Secondly, a series of color shown in reverse order (simulating for the audience the mental state of the protagonist). The two sequences meet at the end of the film, producing one complete and cohesive narrative. In my opinion, the purpose that the director used this narrative style order to make the audience understand main character who, as a result of an injury, has anterograde amnesia (the inability to form new memories) and has short-term memory loss approximately every fifteen minutes.

The plot piont

The point: he is searching for the people who attacked him and killed his wife, using an intricate system of Polaroid photographs and tattoos to track information he cannot remember.

Part one: The film open with the scene that Leonard killed Teddy from some reasons. The story continued by backward narrative. At that time Leonard was finding the murder, name’s John G, from Polaroid photographs and tattoos. The notice point about tatoo’s name Sammy Jankis is one of the first cases in Leonard’s Insurance Investigation. A strange case. Sammy and his wife were in a car accident. Ever since, Sammy has not been able to build any new memories. Leonard’s symptom likes Sammy but he tries to think that he is differenc. Furthermore, Leonard has relationship with Natalie.

Part two: It brings to the important of the story, which is drug trafficking. They have been taking the advantage of his symptom to kill someone.

Part three: It is conclusion of the film. (If you want to know let’s watch the film)

According to the film, Leonard believes in the truth that was recorded more than his memory, also he uses Polaroid photographs and tattoos to solve a case.
